For English speakers, Turkish can often seem like a language in which the creators just throw some Scrabble tiles onto the floor and see what comes up. In actuality, it is a beautiful language that is full of poetry and meaning. İstanbul Başakşehir Futbol Kulübü might therefore look like an odd name for a football team, but it’s simply a football club called Başakşehir that players its games in Istanbul.

The club’s ground, Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium, opened its doors in 2014 and has been the club’s home ever since. It cost around ₺178 million to build and is named in honour of Fatih Terim, the successful Turkish footballer. After enjoying relatively little success in the wake of being formed in 1990, İstanbul Başakşehir F.K. shot to prominence in the wake of the Süper Lig success in 2020.
