The 2021-2022 Champions League returned to normal following two years of disruption in 2019-20 and 2020-21. It wasn’t just a return to normal because capacity crowds were allowed to watch again but also because Real Madrid won it yet again to claim an astounding 14th title in the competition. That is now double their closest rival AC Milan with 7 cups.
Real Madrid were by far from their best but as usual found a way to win. They did it the hard way too coming back in dramatic fashion to beat PSG, Chelsea and Man City before dispatching Liverpool again in the final. This time by a single goal to nil scored by Vinícius Junior.
The final was due to be held at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg but Russia were stripped of hosting duties by UEFA due to their war with Ukraine at the time. The final was moved at late notice to the Stade de France in Paris. It was also marred by concerning scenes before the final as French police tear gassed Liverpool fans trying to get into the ground, including innocent women and children. This lead to the kick off being delayed by 35 minutes.
France is a lovely country it is just a shame they have a police force full of cowards who abuse women and children simply trying to attend a match. Of course, as usual they blamed Liverpool fans but pictures beamed around the world showed it was the French police who instigated all of the violence. The scenes looked more akin to what you would see in a war torn country not in a first world democratic state. Shame on you France and Paris.
Paris should never be allowed to host a final again and the police that used tear gas on children should be sent to prison for abuse. They will host the Olympics in 2024 in Paris and I wouldn’t be taking my children to that given they will likely be tear gassed, tasered or worse for simply asking for directions.
