The 142nd FA Cup ended up being a Manchester Derby between treble chasing Man City and rejuvenated Manchester United. Twenty years previous to this had this final taken place Man United would have been heavy favourites but times have changed a lot in football and Man City naturally went into the game as favourites on a high following their latest Premier League win.
Despite Man United tying with Arsenal by making the final, now with a joint-record 21 final appearances each, they came out of the day with another dubious honour – the first team to lose nine FA Cup finals.
In reality there was only going to be one winner on this day as Ilkay Gundogan, who tend to score in the big games, netted two stunners to take blues beyond the reds. The score of 2-1 was flattering to United who were never really in the contest.
The win for City was their seventh FA Cup title to date and surely will not be their last.
